East Cut Phases
mosaic on public access outdoor staircase
at 388 Beale St, San Francisco
Completed 2026
Designed and fabricated 200 square-feet of mosaic with theme of renewal.
East Cut Phases, explores renewal, a theme woven through two centuries of neighborhood transformation.
The bottom run features coffee bean seedlings, symbols of new life, and a nod to the coffee roasting trade that defined the area in the 1990s.
The middle run depicts native Convergent Lady Beetles and a Western Tiger Swallowtail, both omens of good fortune and change,
and both seen in the neighborhood today.
The top run centers on the Dahlia, San Francisco’s official flower, representing grace and resilience.
Its form echoes a moon in the night sky, evoking renewal and the passage of time.
California Poppy drift across all three runs, unifying the stairway, and in the upper run,
becoming stars, a quiet reminder the transformation, like the sky above is constant.
Funded by The East Cut CBD, SF Community Challenge Grants, UDR Towers by the Bay, LLC, and Karen Wendell of TrustChains.
the mosaic stairway is part of The East Cut CBD‘s street life plan projects,
